The brand boasts a wide range of organic baby formulas based on cow milk, A2 cow milk, and goat milk for all different dietary needs and preferences. Holle formula is available in different varieties, including Holle German, Dutch, and Global. Holle Formula: European Organic & Demeter Certification

Holle formula is proudly EU organic—a strict certification and a symbol of purity. What makes EU organic formula some of the absolute best formula available is that:

    • Minimum of 95% organic ingredients: The vast majority of ingredients must come from organic origin, with the small remainder of ingredients often being micronutrients like vitamins and minerals that don’t qualify for organic status.

    • No Genetically Modified Ingredients: GMOs are strictly prohibited.

    • No Growth Hormones: Animals are never treated with growth hormones.

    • Strictly Limited Antibiotic Use: Animals only consume antibiotics when absolutely necessary for their health.

    • Prohibited Artificial Ingredients: Organic formula is free of artificial colors, flavors, aromas, and sweeteners.

You have probably noticed the bright orange Demeter label on Holle Bio formula, but you may be unfamiliar with what it stands for. The Demeter certification verifies that products are produced using biodynamic methods, which help to ensure that more is given back to the environment than is taken out—you can think of it as ‘organic plus.’ Demeter standards surpass European Organic guidelines. For instance, dehorning animals is prohibited, which helps preserve the nutrients in their milk.

    Environmental Sustainability

Beyond clean ingredients, Holle is committed to environmental sustainability to protect babies’ futures. They offset the CO2 emissions that occur during formula production. In fact, what sets Holle apart from other European baby formulas on the market is that all of their formulas are either climate-neutral or climate-positive!

When You Purchase Holle Baby Formula, You Can Feel Good That:

    • Holle uses organic and/or biodynamically grown ingredients for a pure and nourishing formulation.

    • Raw ingredients are gently processed to preserve natural benefits.

    • Formulas must comply with continual quality control checks to satisfy strict safety, legal, and nutritional requirements.

    • Holle uses sustainable production methods to protect the environment.

    Understanding Holle Formula Ingredients

Thoughtfully selected nourishing ingredients are a must-have in organic formula and a cornerstone of Holle formula. Keep reading to learn more about the premium ingredients that help your baby thrive!

    Holle Formula Ingredients

Organic Vegetable Oils and Milk Fats

Holle organic formula is packed with essential nutrients that help your baby grow and thrive, starting with macronutrients like healthy fats. Fat is vital for supporting your baby’s rapidly developing brain, eyes, and nerves.

Holle Goat is made with whole milk, meaning milk fats are retained. Whole milk is beneficial as it delivers a more natural and bioavailable source of fats, reduces the amount of vegetable oils included, and allows for a palm oil-free recipe.

On the other hand, Holle Cow is based on skimmed milk and thus, it contains a mixture of organic vegetable oils, including sustainably sourced organic palm oil, organic sunflower oil, and organic rapeseed oil.

    Carbohydrates

While all Holle formulas use organic lactose as the primary carbohydrate, just like breast milk, some formulas include complementary carbohydrates, namely, organic maltodextrin and organic starch, from Stage 2 and above. Here, we’ll walk you through each of the different carbohydrates you may see in Holle formula.

    Organic Lactose

Lactose is a sugar naturally present in milk and also the main carbohydrate of human milk. Lactose serves as a nourishing supply of energy for your baby, and research suggests it also helps strengthen gut health and support bone growth and development. Compared to complex carbohydrates, it is thought to be easier to digest. Lactose is the only carbohydrate used in all Holle infant formula (Holle Stage 1 or PRE), and all Stages of Holle Goat Global are also entirely based on lactose.

    Organic Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a processed form of hydrolyzed starch commonly used as a substitute for lactose in formula, and it can help improve milk texture. Maltodextrin is more slowly broken down during digestion than simple carbohydrates, which may give your baby a feeling of fullness. All Holle Dutch and German formulas include maltodextrin as an ingredient from Stage 2 and up.

    Organic Starch

Starch is the main carbohydrate found in plants and thus is present in cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. When added to baby formula, it helps make the consistency more creamy, which many little ones enjoy. Further, it is more slowly broken down during digestion, which may contribute to a feeling of fullness in your baby. From Stage 2 and beyond, mild organic starch is used in Holle Dutch and German formulas.

Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals and Essential Fatty Acids

For a complete source of nutrition, Holle baby formula is enriched with vital micronutrients such as vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin C, Vitamin E, folic acid, sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, and potassium chloride.

Here are the specific ways these nutritional powerhouses work to support your little one's growth and development:

    • Vitamin C: Essential immune support, enhances iron absorption, and is involved in collagen production.

    • Vitamin E: Protects cells and supports various bodily functions.

    • Vitamin K: Crucial for blood clotting and bone health.

    • Vitamin D: Vital for calcium absorption and bone development.

    • Folic Acid: Aids in the production of DNA and RNA and is particularly important for tissues and cells undergoing rapid growth.

    • Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid): Involved in energy production and hormone synthesis.

    • Zinc Sulfate: Supports immune function and wound healing.

We can’t forget about essential fatty acids! All Holle formulas use plant-based docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from algae oil as a source of omega-3. This conscious choice supports babies’ cognitive development and vision, produces a milder flavor, and is an ecologically sustainable alternative to fish oil.

All Holle infant formulas (Stages PRE and 1) also include arachidonic acid (ARA) from Mortierella Alpina oil as a source of omega-6. ARA supports cell function, ensuring a healthy skeletal muscle, nervous, and immune system. While ARA is omitted from Stage 2 and above in Holle Dutch and German formulas, it is present in all Stages of Holle Goat Global formulas.

Like many European formulas, Holle sources ingredients from organic or biodynamic farming whenever possible. If you're curious about the specific ingredients of a particular formula, you can find this information on the formula product page on our website!

What Ingredients Holle Formula Leaves Out

The ingredients left out of an infant formula recipe are equally as important as all the nourishing ingredients put in. Here is a closer look at what Holle ditches when it comes to crafting its organic baby formula to ensure your baby receives all they need to grow up healthy and strong and nothing they don’t!

No Artificial Ingredients or Preservatives ❌

Holle organic formula is meticulously crafted to exclude artificial ingredients and preservatives.

    GMO-Free Commitment ❌

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been the subject of concern for many conscious consumers. Holle has made a resolute commitment to being GMO-free, which is confirmed by the organic certifications on their formulas!

    Skipping Added Sugars ❌

Holle takes a strong stance against the inclusion of added sugars like corn syrup and relies instead on the natural mild sweetness of organic lactose to provide a gentle and wholesome source of energy for growing babies!

    Holle Formula Stages

Every stage of your baby's development is unique, and their nutritional needs evolve as they grow. Holle offers infant, follow-on, and toddler formula to support your child every step of the way.

    Holle Formula Stages

Different Kinds of Holle Organic Formula

Holle baby formula is available in several milk varieties, catering to different dietary needs and preferences. There are three different bases of milk parents can choose from:

    • Skim cow’s milk: This is the base for Holle Cow German.

    • Skim A2 cow’s milk: This is the base for Holle A2 Cow German

    • Whole goat milk: This is the base for Holle Goat Dutch, German, and Global formulas.

Read on to learn more about what makes these formulas unique!

    Holle Goat Milk Formula

Holle goat milk formula is a popular choice for parents with sensitive babies. Infant formulas based on goat milk rather than cow milk come out ahead in terms of digestibility. In fact, babies can digest goat milk formula at roughly twice the speed of the time it takes to digest cow’s milk formula.

Goat milk formulas form milk curds in the stomach that are smaller, softer, and looser than those formed by cow's milk. This means tiny tummies usually have an easier time breaking milk curds down. Plus, the milk proteins in goat milk are naturally A2, whereas most cow's milk protein is A1, which can cause discomfort for some little ones.

Goat milk formula can be a great alternative to cow's milk formula, but it is unsuitable for babies with an established or suspected cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). Due to the similar protein structure of both kinds of milk, there is a risk of cross-over reaction. It is also not appropriate for babies with lactose intolerance.

Holle Goat is available in both German, Dutch, and Global varieties. While the composition between the Holle Dutch and German products is similar, Holle Goat German is available in a wider range of Stages. Moreover, while Holle Goat German is available in 400g boxes, Holle Goat Dutch is offered in 800g metal cans.

Holle Goat Global is crafted for the international market and thus has a composition that meets various nutritional guidelines. It is made with a whole milk base, meaning the composition contains natural milk fats, reduced vegetable oils, and is palm oil free. All stages of Holle Global formula exclusively use lactose as a source of carbohydrates and are crafted with DHA and ARA. Holle Goat Global is available in 600g boxes.

    Holle Cow Milk Formula

Holle offers two different German cow milk formula line based on skimmed cow's milk: Holle Cow and Holle A2 Cow. Let’s look at each of these formulas further.

    Holle Cow German Stages Include:

Holle Cow German is crafted with simple ingredients and a skimmed milk base enriched with vegetable oils. While all stages contain DHA, ARA is omitted from Stages 2 and above. Moreover, Stages 2 up use maltodextrin and starch as complementary carbs alongside lactose. This formula is offered in 600g boxes.

Holle A2 Cow Milk Formula Stages Include:

A2 cow's milk shares a more similar protein structure to breast milk and is a perfect choice for little ones with sensitive tummies. The A2 milk used in Holle formula is EU organic certified and comes from specially selected cows that naturally produce A2 milk. All Stages are enriched with DHA, but ARA is only available in Stage 1. From Stage 2, Holle includes maltodextrin and starch in addition to lactose. Holle A2 Cow German is available in 400g boxes.

Holle Goat vs A2 Cow Milk Formula

Holle organic goat milk formula and Holle A2 cow’s milk formula are gentle formulas well suited to sensitive tummies. A2 milk can be easier to digest as it doesn’t release the inflammatory peptides associated with A1 milk during digestion. Moreover, most of the proteins found in breast milk are also A2!

Holle Goat may be a better match if you are looking for a formula closest to breast milk because it’s made with whole goat milk, which retains its milk fat, unlike skimmed milk used to make Holle A2 Cow.

Further, Holle Goat may be a better match for babies that are sensitive to cow’s milk proteins. Keep in mind that both options are unsuitable for cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) and lactose intolerance.
