Did you know that the most popular first food of choice for little ones around the world is baby cereal? That's right, a whopping 65% of babies enjoy cereal meals by 4 to 6 months.

When it comes to cereals, Holle makes some of our absolute favorites! In addition to being certified European organic, most of Holle’s cereals also hold the Demeter seal, which is one of the highest organic certifications in Europe!

Holle makes a variety of cereals suitable for babies and small children starting from the 5th month. With multiple grain varieties to choose from, you can select porridges, milk cereals, or junior muesli to give your baby a diverse, well-rounded weaning diet!

Holle Organic Baby Food Brand History

Holle is an established and respected baby food manufacturer with over 85 years of experience. Their company was founded in 1933 in Arlesheim, Switzerland, making it one of the oldest baby formula manufacturers in Europe.

Holle was one of the first companies to manufacture organic baby food and is a pioneer in the field of biodynamic food. They were one of the first companies to obtain the Demeter organic seal on their products!

Today, Holle is one of the leading Demeter-certified organic baby formula manufacturers. Did you know that since 2014, all Holle baby porridge, milk cereals, and junior mueslis have been CO2-neutral? When producing baby food and formula, Holle takes a holistic approach that respects the well-being of people, animals, and nature.

They guarantee the highest possible safety measures to achieve high-quality taste and nutrition in Holle products, which helps set them apart from other baby food on the market.

    Holle Organic Standards

Carefully selected organic ingredients are a must-have, and fortunately, you can count on the premium ingredients in Holle's cereals to meet your baby's nutritional needs! While all of Holle's cereals are certified organic by the European Union, many are also certified by the Demeter company. Read on to learn more about the benefits of Holle's organic quality!

    European Organic Certification

All of Holle's baby food holds the EU organic certification. What makes EU organic baby food so special is that it's free of GMOs, artificial colors and preservatives, and aromas or flavor enhancers.

Rest assured that products with the EU organic logo are made with at least 95% organic ingredients, and strict conditions are laid out for the remaining 5% of non-organic ingredients.

In terms of organic baby food, the non-organic ingredients are typically fortified vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids that are necessary to include to support your child's health.

What you won't find in Holle's cereals:

    • GMOs

    • Chemical pesticides

    • Artificial preservatives, colors, & flavors

    • Added sugar

    Demeter Certification

You've probably noticed the bright orange Demeter label that some Holle food carries, but have you ever wondered what exactly Demeter stands for?

The Demeter organic certification system goes beyond the standard organic certification laid out by the EU. It verifies that certain ingredients are grown at biodynamic farms, where Demeter farmers raise animals in humane and caring environments.

When products are grown using biodynamic farming methods, this helps to ensure that more is given back to the environment than taken out, making Demeter's quality so valuable.

When you purchase any of Holle's cereals, you can feel good that:

    • While growing raw ingredients, pesticides and chemical fertilizers are prohibited

    • The food contains organic and/or biodynamically grown ingredients

    • Holle sustains a long-lasting supply of premium raw ingredients by working closely with Demeter farmers

    • Raw ingredients are gently processed and cooked while undergoing continual quality control checks

    • Their products meet strict safety, legal, and nutritional requirements

Holle's cereal is made from organically and biodynamically grown ingredients, which means:

    • Natural cultivation without violence and exploitation of animals & the environment

    • Preference is always given to quality over quantity and biodiversity over monocultures

    • Animals are kept in their natural environment, and growth stimulants are prohibited

    • Organic compost is used as a natural fertilizer

The Different Kinds of Holle Cereals

Holle makes three main kinds of cereal to help support your baby's growing body and fuel them with the energy and nutrients they need as they begin a mixed diet! Parents can choose from Holle porridge, milk cereals, and junior muesli, all of which are quick and easy to prepare and full of tasty nutrients.

No matter which cereal you opt for, you can feel good knowing that only carefully selected grains are used in Holle cereals. Plus, they are free of added sugar and GMO ingredients, and there are egg and gluten-free options available. Many Holle cereals use whole grains to retain the most nutrients. Wholegrain means all three parts of the grain are left intact, which are the bran, endosperm, and germ.

Did you know that whole grains help to support immune system function, are important in cell communication and gene regulation, are anti-inflammatory, and are rich in antioxidants? These grains help to protect against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.

Demeter-quality grains are cooked specially to ensure that valuable nutrients are gently unlocked with heat. After being cooked, the grains are finely ground into soft flakes, making them more easily digestible for young babies.

Although Holle cereal comes in a variety of grain options from millet to tapioca and single to multigrain, Holle recommends starting your little one off with a single-grain cereal, ideally, one that is low in allergens and gluten-free such as their rice or millet baby porridge. By beginning with only a single-grain variety such as Holle organic baby oatmeal porridge, it will be easier for you to tell what your baby enjoys and what they can or cannot tolerate.

    Cereal Preparation

If you'd like to amp up the diversity in your child's mixed diet, Holle recommends preparing their cereals with:

    • Warm breastmilk (let the mixture cool to room temperature before feeding)

    • Half water/whole milk

    • Baby formula (Pro tip: Holle baby formula stage 2 for babies 6+ months is specifically designed to complement a mixed diet and can be used in Holle porridge preparation)

    • Milk-free cereal can be made with water

You can also add additional age-appropriate ingredients to their cereals, such as fruit jelly or freshly pureed fruit, your baby's milk (breast milk or formula), and finely chopped meats and veggies.

When making a Holle cereal, it is best to prepare fresh food for your baby. Further, Holle encourages parents to add between 1 and 2 teaspoons of organic baby oil to the cereal. Organic baby oil is a vegetable oil often used for weaning purposes, by adding it to cereal porridges which are virtually fat-free, it helps to boost the availability of fat-soluble nutrients and increase the essential fatty acid content of the meal. If you don't have organic baby oil on hand, rapeseed or sunflower oil can be used in place.

In addition to adding baby oil to your little one's cereal, Holle also recommends putting vitamin C-rich fruit juice or fruit puree into their vegetable and milk cereals. Vitamin C helps to enhance your little one's meal by boosting the vitamin content of the food, and it also helps your baby better absorb iron from their cereal.
